Yereung Tomb is located at Seosamneung tomb cluster. Yereung tomb is the twin tomb of King Cheoljong and Queen Cheorin. King Cheoljong was born in 1831 and died in Changdeokgung Palace in 1863. Queen Cheorin was born in 1837 and died in 1878 in Changgyeong-gung Palace.

Shrine at Yereung Tomb

Yereung Tomb is located at Seosamneung tomb cluster. Yereung tomb is the twin tomb of King Cheoljong and Queen Cheorin. King Cheoljong was born in 1831 and died in Changdeokgung Palace in 1863. Queen Cheorin was born in 1837 and died in 1878 in Changgyeong-gung Palace.

King Cheoljong was a great-grandson of Crown Prince Sado and ascended to the throne when King Heongjong died without an heir. When King Heongjong died the Queen Grandmother (Queen Sunwon) called Cheoljong , who was living on the island of Ganghwado, to be the next King. He became King at 18 years old and at the beginning of his reign the Queen Grandmother ruled on his behalf. During his reign he was not able to properly run the government due to influence from the Queen Grandmother and her family.

Take line 3 to Samsong Station and leave exit 5. Take bus number 41 and get off at Seosamneung Entrance (서삼릉입구). Walk straight for 5 minutes and you will see the ticket area.

Hyoreung tomb is located nearby to Seosamneung site. Seosamneung tomb area is split up into 3 areas. Hyoreung tomb holds the bodies of King Injong and Queen Inseong. King Injong was born in 1515 and died in 1545. His mother, Queen Janggyeong who is also buried near by died after giving birth to him. Queen Inseong was born in 1514 and died in 1577.

King Injong was the eldest son of King Jungjong. He ascended to the throne in 1544 following his father’s death. King Injong was the shortest ruling King of the Joseon Dynasty. After his father’s death he neglected his own health and died after only 9 months on the throne.

Seosamneung Tombs (서삼릉) are the names given to the three royal tombs (Huireung, Hyoreung & Yereung) west of Seoul. There are many other tombs at this site and in the surrounding area. The tombs are of Heomyo (deposed queen lady Yun), Hyochangwon,

Statue at Huireung Tomb

Seosamneung Tombs (서삼릉) are the names given to the three royal tombs (Huireung, Hyoreung & Yereung) west of Seoul. There are many other tombs at this site and in the surrounding area. The tombs are of Heomyo (deposed queen lady Yun), Hyochangwon, Uiryeongwon,  45 tombs for royal concubines, tombs for princes and princesses and the placenta chambers. These tombs are a short walk from the main Seosamneung site.

Huireung:
This is the royal tomb of Queen Janggyeong, 2nd wife of King Jungjong. She was born in 1491 and in 1515 died 7 days after giving birth to a son who later became King Injong. For pictures and a detailed guide to this tomb at Seosamneung, visit our Huireung tomb page.

Hyoreung:
This is the royal tomb of King Injong, the 12th monarch of the Joseon Dynasty and Queen Inseong. King Injong was born in 1515 and passed away in 1545. Queen Inseong was born in 1514 and passed away in 1577. King Injong was the shortest reigning king of the Joseon Dynasty. He served as king for only nine months. This is the royal tomb of King Cheoljong, the 25th monarch and Queen Cheorin. King Cheoljong was born in 1831 and died in 1863. Queen Cheorin was born in 1837 and passed away in 1878. Red Gate at Changneung tomb

Changneung tomb is located at the Seeoreung tomb site. Changneung tomb is made up of two tombs, the tomb of King Yejong and his second wife Queen Ansun. King Yejong was the 8th monarch King of the Joseon Dynasty. He was born in 1450 and passed away in 1469. He was the second son of King Sejo and became king after the sudden death of his brother Uigyeong (Later King Deokjong). King Yejong’ time in power was short lived as he died 14 months after ascending the throne due to poor health. During his short reign as King several incidents occurred. He also granted common farmers the right to cultivate fields which originally belonged to the military. He died in Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1469.

Queen Ansun was born around 1455 and died in 1498. She married King Yejong after his first wife died shortly after giving birth to Prince Inseong.

Changneung tomb was built in 1470 to house King Yejong and Queen Ansun was buried on the adjacent hill in 1499. Every year on April 16th the memorial rites of Changneung are held.

How to get to Changneung tomb at Seooreung Royal Tombs:

Take line 3 to Nokbeon Station and leave exit 4. Walk straight for about 100 metres and there will be two bus stops on your left. Get on bus 9701 (Red) or Bus 702A (Blue, make sure its is A). Get off at Seooreung Entrance(서오릉입구).
You can also get bus 9701 (Red) from Gusan station line 6 exit 1.
When you get off at the bus stop take the first right and head straight. You will then see the Seooreung Tomb Entrance.
