Donggureung Tombs

Donggureung Tombs in Guri, Gyeonggi-do are a perfect exmaple of Royal Tombs during the Joseon Dynasty. Donggureung is a cluster of 17 King and Queen tombs’ including King Taejo the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, spread out in 9 tomb sites. Donggureung royal tombs and others were added to the UNESCO World Hertitage list in June, 2009. All of the tombs at Donggureung are neung type tombs which house Kings and Queens. There are a few unique types of tombs located at this site.

Sureung: Sureung tomb holds theĀ  bodies of King Munjo (1809 – 1830) and Queen Sinjeong (1808 – 1890). King Munjo, died at the age of 22 and his wife lived until the age of 83. This tomb is quite unique as the King and Queen are buried in the same mound and not the traditional twin tombs.

Hyeolleung: Hyeolleung tombs is a twin tomb holding the bodies of King Munjong and Queen Hyeondeok. King Munjong was the 5th King of the Joseon Dynasty and son of King Sejong and took over the throne after his father passed away. King Munjong had bad health and died after only two years on the throne.

Mongneung: Mongneung tombs consists of the tombs of King Seonjo, Queen Ui-in and Queen Inmok. King Seonjo was the 14th King of the Joseon Dynasty. King Seonjo’s rein in power was a bad time for Korea as there was repeated invasions by the Japanese. At this site there are 3 individual tombs.

Geonwolleung: Geonwolleung tomb holds the body of King Taejo. King Taejo was the founder of the Joseon Dynasty and he is the King that relocated the capital to Seoul. The tomb is located on a high hill by itself.

Hwireung: Hwireung tomb holds the body of Queen Jangnyeol.

Wolleung: Wolleung tomb holds the bodies of King Yeongjo and Queen Jeongsun in twin tombs. King Yeongjo was the 21st King of the Joseon Dynasty. King Yeongjo lived and rule the longest out of all the Joseon Kings.

Gyeongneung: Gyeongneung is a unique triple tomb holding the bodies of King Heonjong, Queen Hyohyeon and Queen Hyojeong. King Heonjong was the 24th king of the Joseon Dynasty. He is the son of King Munjong who is also buried at Donggureung Tombs.

Hyereung: Hyereung tomb holds the body of Queen Danui.

Sungneung: Sungneung tomb is a joint twin tomb holding the bodies of King Hyeonjong and Queen Myeongseong. King Hyeonjong was the 18th king of the Joseon Dynasty and the only king that was born abroad (China).

Opening Hours / Admission

March – October: 06:00 am – 18:30 pm.
November – February: 06:30 am – 17:30 pm.
Tickets stop going on sale 1 hour before closing.
Closed on Mondays.

Admission:

1,000 won for adults and 500 won for children.

How to get to Donggureung Royal Tombs:

From Gangbyeon station get bus 1, 1-1 or 9-2 and get off at Donggureung stop. You can also get bus 2 or 6 from Guri station and get off at Donggureung stop. After getting off the bus you will see the entrance accross the street.
